XCVI - Black Goo

.
.

Black Goo

Spread thinly on some buttered toast,
The essence of Australia, silver-plated.
More Aussie than the kangaroo, some boast,
Since it is really only beer, reincarnated.

This wondrous, thick and coal-black goo
Is the ink of our history’s social pages.
But, of course, there are the critics too,
Who think it mud from primeval ages.

It’s Australia Day, so let us unite:
And at the time the flag’s unfurled,
Give a salute to the great Vegemite;
Australia’s gift to an undeserving world.

  1. Ugh... one of the few things on the planet I won't eat... Vegemite, Marmite, caviar, and olives. Blech!

  2. i've never had it. i've seen it in grocery stores in larger cities, but i'm not sure our small town stocks it.
    so, do you like it?

  3. Like? Like is too mild a word. People either love it or loath it.

    I love it.

  4. I had Vegemite almost confiscated going into Libya once.

    "What's this?"
    "Vegemite"
    "What's it used for?"
    "You eat it"
    "Then eat it. Now."

  8. I have to tell you that I tried this once ... and only once. It was horrible. I'm sorry. We are probably undeserving but I have to say YECH!
