782 - You Never Know

Photo from Nepal by Samantha Chin.

You Never Know

You never know the prints you leave
Or even if the snows will grieve
When time and times erase
Your clear but superficial trace.
When we can no longer perceive
That certain presence you would weave
Only then will we believe
But hope still lives in that empty space—
You never know.

We harbor the hope that we can retrieve
That sense of life, that joie de vivre.
An enticing thought we can’t erase
And draw comfort from its warm embrace;
Maybe simple, maybe naïve.
You never know.

  1. Question is: should we know?

  2. We almost always leave a trace of ourselves or an impression wherever we travel and with the people we meet.
    Lovely words dear Cosmo.

  3. Welcome back. With a profound question too.
    Myself, I hope to disappear.

  4. Hope alone of all the gifts remained in the jar after Pandora opened it. That is what sustains so many of us to this day.

  6. We all leave our print..however simple or naive...or in a certain little lady's case sticky little hand prints..we may not have changed the world but for a microscopic moment of time we were in it..(and very good to see you back)..

  7. Do I hope so? or not? I'm quite happy not to know. But I can attest to the traces still with me of everyone who passed this way. Beautifully expressed.

  8. Unfortunately true...we will not know the prints we leave. They will only be seen after we leave this earth.

  10. I'm not sure what prints I want to leave, but can we really choose? Maybe we can just try to wear our moccasins.. And write our words as poets

  14. You never know right? all we can do is go out and live life to find out. or we can learn from older generations like our parents and their siblings and parents and so on. thanks for the thought.

  17. Well, we don't know. But we do know the little prints we can leave that matter to us and others
    now. Thought provoking poem. Enjoyed.

  19. One can never know but one must anticipate. Anticipation is the first step towards preparedness!

  20. I am a bit like Björn, I am not sure what I'd like to leave. And is what I want even what should be left behind. Though-provoking and beautiful pom on legacy!

  21. 'You never know the prints you leave' ~ I pretty sure we leave our 'prints'...which ones? - the ones we expressing by communicating our truth if we will....if not - we still influence the others on energetic level. ~ Glad you're back, Cosmo!

  22. If nothing else, the Himalayas remind us that the Earth will move beneath us, despite our best efforts at inhabiting the territory or turning it into our playground. A harsh lesson, it is true.

  23. I was thinking about you last night, Cosmo...hoping you'd make a re-appearance soon; a comeback as it were! And now this morning I see you've been back for a week!! Sorry I missed your return.

I was off the air for three days last week...unable to be connected to the Internet...and I'm still catching up with everything that went on during the time I was missing in action!

    I love your poem, Cosmo...welcome back. :)
