1321 - Blight on Bald Mountain

The Sunday Whirl presents twelve words for us to use in a creative writing piece.

This weeks words are:
Demons, wings, flickering, heat, omen, dark, end, cunning,
shadows, unfathomable, gloaming, despair

Blight on Bald Mountain

By the pricking of my thumbs,
something wicked this way comes.
– Macbeth

The unlocking of demons,
Released by the cunning words
Of politicians with devious
Self-interested ends in mind.
Not unfathomable, to be sure.
In the shadows, the oil lobby
Gloats as their puppet
Does his dance, tells his lies
With a flickering, forked, tongue.

The unlocking of demons,
Cleaving to produce heat.
Heat to power us
Heat to chill us.
Heat to distract us.
Heat to kill us.
A dark foreboding wings
Its way through those
Those souls who despair
Of man’s lack of wisdom.

The unlocking of demons,
The omens are not good,
The world enters a gloaming,
The demons are easy to define:
Strontium
Caesium
And
Plutonium-239.

  1. Once again, I admire how effectively you've used the prompts – even in uttering these sad truths.

  2. Ominous predictions...solution?....glass of wine...listen to some nice music...stroke a four legged cuddly feline in front of a warm fire if two legged one unavailable :)

  3. Really good use of the prompts, and sadly way too true.

  5. All the demons are truly out in the open - and yes the omens (are they still just omens) are not good... we face distaster at so many levels... wonderful use of the prompts.

  6. I wouldn't expect anything cheerful from those prompts... Deep emotional suffering? Hopelessness? Nothing is certain in this world overshadowed by dark forces. Tomorrow... Tomorrow?.. Will there even be a tomorrow? I agree with the previous comments - what an excellent way to utilise the prompts!

  7. In the US it's usually the R-puppet vs the D-puppet. Oil, munitions, pharma, tech, what calls itself big agriculture--neither candidate can ever be relied on to represent the public against any of them. For example, glyphosate got totally out of hand and became a public health problem in the Obama administration but neither Trump nor Biden has done anything worthwhile about it and, in fact, both of their administrations have deliberately made it harder for people in poorer countries to avoid poisoning themselves with this disaster chemical. If glyphosate happens to be your main issue, as it is mine, there's no difference between Trump and Biden at all, nor any hope that Flood Pants would ever have the fortitude to make one. It was the same way when the Vietnam war was a lot of people's main issue--"Johnson's war," but Nixon kept fighting it. Rare are the days when any change people have been working toward for years is actually made, and some say murky financial interests have to be involved even to get something as universally wanted as the end of the apartheid system...
