Odd Bird Out
You are different, with all that that implies:
You fly independently from the rest
And you always manage to surprise.
You command your own space in the skies
And, as those who care for you can attest,
You are different, with all that that implies.
We all have some facets that we disguise
But there are sides to you few would have guessed
And you always manage to surprise.
To underestimate you would be unwise:
You have a toughness, with which few are blessed,
You are different, with all that that implies.
Beneath a composed exterior lies
A passionate heart that beats with zest
And you always manage to surprise.
Who you really are, I can but surmise
But the truth of it is simply expressed:
You are different, with all that that implies,
And you always manage to surprise.

Different is good!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful use of the form, repetition reinforcing what appears to be delight at the difference . . .
ReplyDeleteInnovative indeed !!!
ReplyDeleteI love the style and flow of your words. Individuality is always refreshing.
ReplyDeleteThis is simply lovely. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThe villanelle is certainly your forte. A lovely flow and empathy to this one.Little birds feature quite a bit in your work..a tendency to recognise the fragile perhaps.
ReplyDeleteThe birds that inspire me are tough little numbers that would give me a serious pecking if I stepped out of line.
DeleteA beautiful study of individuality and the enticement of those who are difficult to fully know.
ReplyDeleteYes, indeed. There is a beauty in complexity.
DeleteMarvelous villanelle!
ReplyDeleteLovely composition :)
ReplyDeleteAs meticulous as the image that goes with it. such an accomplished form.
ReplyDeleteStrong poetry, well done. Love to a form used so successfully :-)
ReplyDeleteI like this a lot. And your love for the 'differentness' that makes someone very special indeed.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mary. Quite right.
DeleteOoooh! Round of applause from me!
ReplyDeleteI do love a villanelle, and this is such an excellent exploration of an independent and quirky personality. My fave line is the first, and I love the choice of b rhyme - wonderful selection of words.
Excellent work. The repetition works really well in this. I'm so glad different exists in this world.
ReplyDeleteUnique and original--love how you have described it in this excellent use of the form.
ReplyDeleteI can relate...that's me on the lower wire.
ReplyDeleteThis ode to the unique, the quirky, the boldly independent and individual made me shout an inner "Hooray!" And form is honored in the process. Well done.
ReplyDeleteYou are different, with all that implies... love that... There needs to be more praise for the unique individuals... I've never written a villanelle and now you have made me curious... I really liked this poem.
ReplyDeleteI guess I have to echo the above---beautiful use of the form--and the repetition really marks the important emotions and thoughts--lovely write!
ReplyDeleteVery nice, like how you used the style and the message within
