A Dream
Reposted in memory of
Elizabeth Roberts, 1915-2012.
I dreamt about a distant place,
All white, yet strangely warm;
Where all was elegance and grace:
There was presence but no form.
Into this quiet and peaceful scene
A man stepped into view;
Handsome, strong and cut quite clean.
A woman stood there, too.
He looked at her, and with a smile,
Remembered when they’d wed;
“I’m glad you’ve come. It’s been a while.”
“A friend sent me” she said.
Happy with the eons spanned
They embraced and gently kissed;
Then they turned, and hand in hand,
Slipped off into the mist.

This piece was originally written after the death of Joan Heys, a family friend. It seemed appropriate for commemorating the death of Elizabeth, Margaret's aunt.

Very nice Mr. Newberry!
ReplyDeleteTruly beautiful. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThis has an air of enchantment about it. Now I'm curious, do you believe we will reconnect with our loved ones when we die? Simply curious :)

No.
DeleteThinking about it a bit more - the poem is not so much a theological statement as a reflection of a beautiful love story. Elizabeth and Richard were a lovely, loving couple. This poem was just a tying up of loose ends.
DeleteDelightful!
ReplyDeleteNicely written.
ReplyDeleteReally beautiful image here !!!

ReplyDeleteGreat commitment to rhyme! The tone melded dream-like with conversational, which made a fantastic read.
ReplyDeletewow...A perfect philosophical start which lilts the reader to glide through the end...beautiful poem, Cosmo.
ReplyDeletethere was presence but no form is very evocative and a really good line
ReplyDeleteHow happy to dream of reunions in Heaven!
ReplyDeleteThat is beautiful, J Cosmo. Wouldn't it be nice if it were possible that one could meet with the deceased loved one another time in a setting like this before each went their own way again and disappeared into the mist!
ReplyDeleteAh - this is so gentle and really beautiful to read.
ReplyDeleteI long for this kind of happy reunion
ReplyDeleteA bittersweet dream. Your poem was beauiful, but had undercurrents of sadness. The form was flawless and the rhyme smooth and natural.
ReplyDeleteSigh. I hope for those who were happily married it's really like that.
ReplyDeleteHow sweet and lovely... I hope it's like this. Very well written...
ReplyDeleteAwww...I do hope it is exactly like this too. It is perfection.
