Sunday Scribblings has the prompt 'Moment'.
A Song of the Moment
The heart bursts forth in glorious song,
As the sun, embracing the dawn.
It’s as warm and rich and sweet and strong,
As the inspiration from which it’s drawn.
But the heart and brain are oft at odds
In this song of inflated proportions.
The heart will try to ignore the prods
Of a brain that counsels caution.
There comes a moment of leaden pain,
When wild exuberance is slowed,
When the heart concedes to the brain
And chooses the other road.
That doesn’t mean the dream was wrong
Nor stop the heart from humming it’s song.

Yes, lovely, and perhaps saved by the brain, or not.
ReplyDeleteGood rhyme, good meter - fine job...
ReplyDeleteawe yes, choose the low road and be safe...the heart will lead you into some kind of trouble...no-"safe" be damned...let it all hang out...live a little
ReplyDeleteHey! Anyone seen my budgie?
ReplyDeleteAny chance I have of seeing the sun these days is in my dreams; even so, I have to look up some pictures to remind myself what the sun does look like!
ReplyDeleteFlights of fancy are all very well, but seldom lead anywhere. Good escapism though :)
ReplyDeleteThe reality of situations is often very different to what the heart is thinking, so perhaps best to listen to the brain sometimes. Although agree with gsb that adventure is good sometimes.
The age old dilemma - the struggle between the head and the heart. Some lovely imagery such as ' leaden pain'when conceding to the brain. Glad your heart is still humming its song even though bearly audible in 'sotto voce'.

DeleteLove both the message and the medium here!
DeleteSchucks!...missed the comment.Must have been something to do with the bear hugs I have been giving you lately.
DeleteLovely rhythm in this! Ah - the eternal struggle between emotion and reason!
ReplyDeleteI would like to see your take on those occasions when the heart triumphs over the brain.
ReplyDeleteCould be risky.
DeleteBooks can only reveal us to ourselves, and as often as they do us this service we lay them aside.

DeleteSo very true, JC. Much of the time perhaps. But there also are those wonderful times when the head and heart agree wholeheartedly. And wonderful they are.

brilliant
A balanced construction here indeed underscores the mind over matter! Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteI loved how you ended the debate between the heart and the mind - Keep dreaming, even if some dreams are a little less likely to come true than others :)
ReplyDeleteThe heart wants what it wants and doesn't wish to listen to the brain...but in this poem it seemed to have made the right choice...love how you ended it!

Wonderful sonnet Cosmo! One can realize a folly if given good counsel. It's always good to know good sense prevailed! Nicely!

The heart and the brain so often at odds...sort of like a tipping point, I think.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy a sonnet - yours is so expressive and the couplet makes quite an impact.
ReplyDeleteVery nicely put! More often than not being ruled by the heart leads to pain.
