Post Hoc
The victors create the records
To ensure their place is set.
The losers cower from the blows
But they will not forget.
Both sides construct the next divides
And so history is altered.
A fence constructed afterwards
To prove the horse has bolted.

This is absolutely true!
ReplyDeleteVery clever and as MZ said, very true.
ReplyDeleteVery astute!
ReplyDeleteWho was it that said history is written by the winners?
ReplyDeleteChurchill.
DeleteIndeed people write the things they did and for us it become a history.
ReplyDeleteand so history is altered. very true.
ReplyDeleteVery well said, who knows what actually happened.
ReplyDeleteWow, I like the simplicity and the message here
ReplyDeleteAs long as we see history from the perspective of winners/losers, mankind walks two steps back and is the ultimate loser.
ReplyDeleteYes, absolutely true.
Delete"A fence constructed afterwards
ReplyDeleteTo prove the horse has bolted."
We can't seem to get passed this.
and history ever repeats itself
ReplyDeletein an endless cycle and because
its rewritten we never learn from it...
This is brilliant in its succinctness and completely satisfying in its unique image... not only bolting the proverbial door but constructing the fence as "proof" - I do love this one
ReplyDeleteA fence constructed afterwards
ReplyDeleteTo prove the horse has bolted.
we will never learn when all we do is react to what has already happened.
Yes, that seems to be the way it is!! And will continue to be.
ReplyDeleteOh and this rings and clangs up and down the centuries doesn't it? When will they ever learn? I love your succinct style! Wherein The Muse's Vehicle Goes Into the Shop for Repairs
ReplyDeleteSuccinct...and this is so true!
ReplyDeleteHa. Very clever - "a fence constructed afterwards to prove the horse has bolted". We have a lot of that going on up here in eastern Canada among politicians these days :)
ReplyDeleteClever write--and really well constructed I thought!
ReplyDeleteExtremely true words.
ReplyDeleteBest reason in the world why individuals should keep journals about daily existence. No winners or losers, just everyday people. Now that might really alter history.

so true. in school they taught us history as if it's all just black and white, but it's not. I love the closing lines.
ReplyDeleteA fence constructed afterwards
ReplyDeleteTo prove the horse has bolted.
There are no winners! It's retribution if they're strong and blame game galore if they're weak. Life goes on a jagged path! Nicely Cosmo!
Hank
