Three Word Wednesday requires participants
to use the three words of the week in a composition.
The words this week are: uncovered, abrupt, vacant.
St Patrick’s Day 2016
A green grass carpet
Blankets Ireland, coast to coast—
No part uncovered.
A brief hissy fit—
Snakes abruptly departed
Feeling unwanted.
Was Ireland vacant?
Snakes gone. Potato famine.
Early refugees.

I forgot about the snakes (my mind focused on Guinness no doubt) - i like the subtle reminded that refugee have always been a part of history and world affairs.. we all are in some way..
ReplyDeleteThe snakes were gone banished into the sea, so it had been told!
ReplyDeleteHank
A very different take on the day. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteA timely take indeed!
ReplyDeleteMy 3WW tale!
love your take on this
ReplyDeleteThere can be few places in the world that haven't see the migration of humans and animals over the millenia. Curiously most of the snakes in the world seem to have migrated to Australia!
ReplyDeleteIndeed there have long been refugees.
ReplyDeleteSuch a timely poem :)
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting take on Irish history....all that green still there....no I think a necessary purging of the land perhaps. Oh and my great grandfather was one of those refugees.
ReplyDeleteI love it when poetry speaks of history and myth, and does it so well.
ReplyDeleteYou encapsulate the history in your terse lines. Ireland has a special place in my heart though I have never been there.
ReplyDeleteWell done, Cosmo.......I especially like envisioning her blanketed in green.
ReplyDeleteI could not find the comment button so I clicked here...Hi Sherry :-)...I just wanted to say I love the way you played the words here with a lesson in the lines and I hope your St. Patrick's day was lucky and good Cosmo. :-)
DeleteNice abstract take on Ireland - vert telling... And nicely done... A refreshing read - thank you...
ReplyDeleteI love this:
ReplyDelete"A brief hissy fit—
Snakes abruptly departed"
And the last stanza.
I think people having a reason to leave have done so in the past.. famine or war (or both)
ReplyDeleteTimely....both the departure of the snakes (a snake departing is always a welcome, timely thing in my book!!!) and your beautiful weaving of history and poetry.
ReplyDeleteWonderful Snippet of history.
ReplyDeleteZQ
