Three Word Wednesday requires participants
to use the three words of the week in a composition.
The words this week are: damned, babble and cherished.
The Hall of the Damned
The Hall of the Damned is seething,
There’s smoke and fire and din.
There’s filth and there is misery
And the only way is in.
In this sorry hall of agony
The place is fiendish hot;
The people writhe with endless pain,
And struggle with their lot.
They have no way of knowing
What lies beyond its walls
But babble on in endless hope
That it's a better place that calls.
In this verdammt and musty hall
All faint hopes are cherished.
As those who did not grasp a dream,
Invariably just perished.
But what if this depressing place
Was reality, in the raw?
What if this is all we get—
Just this and nothing more?
What if we knew we had one shot,
Just one crack at our heartfelt dream,
Would we be quite so tolerant
Of those who skim the cream?
In the darkened Hallways of the Damned,
There is smoke and fire and din.
Is it because we have been fooled,
To let the bastards win?

Very interesting thoughts.. it does feel sometimes that the whole thing is a con and someone else is winning...
ReplyDeleteI wonder if this hall does not exist, and we are lured by the bastards that we will be rewarded for our suffering... Is it worth it being a flagellant?
ReplyDeleteI LOVE THIS...what a ponder indeed....would we be so tolerant and nonchalant about it?
ReplyDeleteI think we do only get one chance - and invariably the bastards cut the cream.. maybe let them keep the cream..curdle their arteries whilst we drink some chilled wine and enjoy the 'not so bad' bits of our turn on earth
ReplyDeleteBrilliant write..!
ReplyDeleteOh, this is wry and perfect! I think you have nailed it, Cosmo! This is just brilliant.
ReplyDeleteI do believe we have just one shot. And loathe that we are letting the bastards win. And breed.
ReplyDeleteHell is empty. All the devils are here..Shakespeare
ReplyDeleteL'enfer c'est les autres...Jean Paul Sartre
Heaven is getting away from them.
Geddit? :)
Hmmm, that last line puts me in mind of our politicians, who sometimes seem set on creating hell on earth.
ReplyDeleteI think so! And as I watch from my particular vantage point over the years, I feel/see the hall getting narrower and narrower. Fine imagery and wit.
