Buying the Grinch
Forget the story history tells,
Consumption’s now the game.
So what if your budget’s bust
To avoid that grinchly name?
So buy.
Do not ask why.
You must.
The ads have told us so—
Cash registers play Jingle Bells,
Merchants whisper Ho-Ho-Ho.

Sadly true. I don't follow rules well though and am happy to wear the grinch cap. Mostly.
ReplyDeleteApologies, I posted a link to your site accidentally.
ReplyDeleteI doubt I would make the same mistake with yours!
DeleteYou will probably disappoint a lot of people.
DeleteLOL - apology graciously accepted!
DeletePoint nicely made!!
ReplyDeleteMerchants are more intelligent :)

much love...
Sadly true.. its all about budget these days.. sigh..
ReplyDeleteI love this. It is my desire not to enter a store in the season....only now, I am tempted by the online ads. "Something for everyone."
ReplyDeleteSo true. The magic is missing, and the credit cards are alarmed. Smiles.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, it definitely does seem all about consumption!! Much of the meaning has been lost, as commercialization seems to be the name of the game.
ReplyDeleteI'll be sleeping in the manger : )

That is so true it makes me weary. This year I've tried to spend no time shopping--made my family a calendar with photos and poems. And yet, I get caught up in the internet adds and have to snap myself out of it. Ho Ho HO indeed!
ReplyDeleteWhat with rents and taxes Christmas is a time they can balance the ledger and hopefully make a fair profit. It is the manufacturers and investors that make the real money.
ReplyDeleteWell isn't that the truth. Black Friday finds shoppers heading for the stores like salmon on their way to spawn ... and the true spirit of Christmas is lost in the shuffle. Loved your poem!
ReplyDeleteMy first thoughts were of how Thanksgiving is no longer a thoughtful holiday.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad about all the commercialism that the holiday now brings.
ReplyDeleteI will always treat myself at Christmas...It is my desire to do so...I don't need anyone to tell me! It's a hangover from my childhood when Christmases were always full of joy and tables bending under the weight of delicious, tempting treats! If I don't spoil myself, no one else will! :)
ReplyDeleteA really good rhythm to your poem. For me the final two lines are clever in their simplicity, they summarise your message so well. A most enjoyable read so thank you for sharing.
