CCCXXXIV - The Tears of Remorse

Mad Kane had a limerick challenge starting with the line "A fellow was starting to rue'.
I sort of took a detour and ended up somewhere else than a limerick.  But I am not sorry.

The Tears of Remorse

The tears of remorse are bitter and cold,
They fall like hail on the green;
The tears of remorse run down your cheeks
As you ponder what might have been.

The tears of remorse are full of salt
That comes from your waves of grief;
The tears of remorse are an outward sign
Of a wayward inner belief.

The tears of remorse are to no avail,
They reflect, not ease, the pain;
The tears of remorse are hope, misplaced,
As you would make the same choices again.

  1. I am not sure that I would make the same choices again; and given return to the same variables I hope that I would not.
    I am also not sure why people always answer "yes" to the question: if you had it to do over again would you do the same?

    I would not . . .

  2. I know how you feel, however it is generally recognised that any decision we make is the right one at the time. Can you think of an occasion when you would knowingly chose the wrong decision? You may make a decision that you don't like but it will be that one best available to you. Remorse for that decision is by a 'different person' under different pressures and with different knowledge.

    A person who looks back honestly, looking at all the influences, will admit that they will have made the same decision again at the time.

    That is why remorse is pointless.

  3. If we'd made different choices then nothing would be the same including the good stuff. Hindsight is a luxury best ignored. You can't change what's gone so best not to dwell on it. I love how you've written it though.

  4. Beautifully and thoughtfully written
    dear J Cosmo ... some of the choices I have made have given me cause for regret but at the time they seemed right and if I had not made them I would have missed out on all of the wonderful moments at the start.

  5. To jump into the fray:

    I wish I had listened to the decisions my intuition was guiding me towards rather than the decisions I made out of trying to please others during those critical 'decision making years.'

    These days, I just try to strike a balance.

    But I agree, remorse is useless unless it drives you to repair a wrong you committed.

  6. I agree. I would make all the same decisions again. There are things in life that I would not like to have missed. If I made different decisions I would have missed them. All of my decisions made were right for me.

  9. All questions of remorse aside, I guess I would have to frame it as "if I knew then what I know now" the same decision may not have been made given the same situation.
    That's what I meant.

You've come this far - thank you.
Take your time, look around,
There is lots to see.
