CDXCIV - The Unsung.

The Unsung.

Heroes, if you believe the press,
Play sports or maybe sing;
They endorse new shoes and aftershave
And other useless things.

They have a house at the best address
And acolytes, that cling;
It seems they always misbehave—
Just flotsam, sold as bling.

Meanwhile, in the world out there,
On each and every day,
Normal people just struggle by,
In any way they may.

In a world that doesn’t seem to care,
Strength comes in many shapes;
These are the real heroes of our time:
 Unsung but on display.

  1. So true, the real heroes most often go unnoticed. Wonderful poem!

  2. Great post, J.C. Reminds me of a time when we had a "disaster" — otherwise called a training exercise. I was driving ambulance. And I had a little girl holding up a bag of iv fluid, just like the little girl in your picture.

    Strange, that, eh? And so painfuly sad.

  3. Thank you. I do have an attack of the hissies often at the misuse of the word hero.

    1. The media use it instead of what they really mean: idol.

      Don't know why, it's not as if they are saving headline space.

  6. I like the way the rhyme is unforced, and your rhythm is well paced. We humans often make heroes of those whom we think we'd most like to be instead of those who try hardest just to survive. We're an odd lot.

  7. Oh, how heart-breaking - the word along with that shot.

  8. In the words of David Bowie..."We can be heroes...just for one day..."

You've come this far - thank you.
