Poet’s United Midweek Motif: Vision
None so blind.
Television.
Far seeing.
The bastard offspring
Of Greek and Latin.
The irony of it:
It makes you
Introspective
Or escapist,
Or passive.
Voyeurs.
If you don’t like
What you see
You can change the channel
But, curiously,
You don’t turn off,
Accepting
The best of the worst.
Transfixed
But seeing nothing.

Given my druthers (which I rarely am) the television doesn't get turned on.
ReplyDeleteYet, here is a window into society.
ReplyDelete(I don't watch TV)
Agree..the best thing to do is to not watch TV.
ReplyDeleteI kicked the habit of television watching a long time ago.
ReplyDelete;-)
What a good time to post this as Australian free to air TV stations show programs with absolutely no care for viewers who must endure endless aged repeats to drive them insane.
ReplyDeleteAre you thinking of running for a government post? Good luck! You will NEED it...(luck, that is, not the post)
ReplyDeleteBeen without teevee since the "box" because damned if I would spend money to watch commercials.
So?!?
Went to the hospital for a week and found the blank screen staring at me from it's perch of a pulpit.
Didn't care. I would look at weather, news, have my fill of the previous day's ills, murders, deaths, criminal activities....and the police weren't the ONLY murderers....
But I wasn't forced to watch, just didn't care for most.
Some stare into a mirror and hate what they see...
Heavy girls feel fat, pimples make the whole face ugly, or a deformation is hideous.
A cat stares into a mirror, and sees a lion. A dog stares and sees a tiny, fast flying chimney swift. A growing boy sees....
Well , anything he wants to see.
It is but a mirror.
Just as teevee is but a mirror.
Just a mirror.
You may fear looking, but, ostriches (if hey truly did hide their heads in the sand) would liter the beaches with their bodies until they were extinct.
The world's valium - perhaps we never turn down the offer of sedatives..not once we suspect what's truly out there.. a window is a window.. maybe it should always be left open for when we need it..
ReplyDeletei put on soft instrumental music and read poetry or free verse or prose or Nature, etc. that's how i turn the channel
ReplyDeleteThe best thing to do is not to let the media manipulate us..
ReplyDeletehaha such truth in
ReplyDeleteYou don’t turn off,
Accepting
The best of the worst.
Sums up life pretty well too
This is how I feel, too. I can't believe what I am seeing, yet keep watching in faint hope it might start to improve.
ReplyDeleteThankfully I have ceased to watch... I only stream what I like after it's been broadcasted.
ReplyDelete.....But seeing nothing........ how true that is. Most enjoyable read
ReplyDeleteI choose carefully what I watch...thankfully there is still good television left.
ReplyDelete" Transfixed But seeing nothing." An indelible line - and a powerful metaphor ... applicable to so many scenarios and human folly.
ReplyDeleteWhoa! You nailed this one down with timely theme and a creative style. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year
But, curiously,You don’t turn off,
ReplyDeleteAccepting The best of the worst.
Transfixed
Yes, very true! There are not much new choices in our local scene. It is full of re-runs and ads that one just leave it to fate to hope for a good one that comes along!
Hank
I support anything non chemical which is escapist. Beats counting sheep or real life. For insomniacs I recommend The Barchester Chronicles by Trollope on DVD....guaranteed to have anyone zzzzzzing in a matter of minutes.
ReplyDeleteWhat??? I was rivetted by the Barchester Chronicles! Loved and adored it. It was heaven. Certainly did not put me to sleep.
Deletekill. your. television (rinse, repeat) ~
ReplyDeleteI am one of those other people who is very choosy about what I watch, never turn it on unless there is something I really want to see, seldom stray to the commercial channels – and am passionate about the shows I do watch.
