Curved Downhill

9:30am

The morning tea trolley

Is found

Moving room to room:

Tea, coffee, biscuits.

Room 403 – Mr Ellington.

“Good morning, Duke!”

“Good morning, Princess!”

The slightly built lady smiles—

“The usual?”

“Yes, please.”

He is alone.

His wife, companion

Of forty years

Passed away last year.

He is waiting.

Not unhappy.

Just waiting.

3:30pm

The afternoon tea trolley

Is found

Moving room to room:

Tea, coffee, biscuits.

Another—longer—trolley,

Passes by.

Its contents covered by a sheet.

The tea trolley

Reaches Room 403.

It is empty.

Thanks for taking part this week. Sad tale, but he is no longer waiting and has joined his wife.

  4. That's how life is. At times an over filled tea trolley on others an empty cart. Very well told story. The importance of time is underscored subtly. The waiting is part of it. At the fag end it's integral. We wait for everything.

  5. There's a science fiction feel to this room 403, as if another story is just beginning. :)

  6. You've put so much emotion into these simple slice of life scenes. I can picture the friendly morning greeting and feel the emptiness of that afternoon.

    1. You probably did. Blogger had a seniors moment and forgot how to process comments for a few days.

  8. I hope that his leaving was a good thing - although poignant, your poem didn't make me feel sad - to be re-united with our loved ones and escape the rattle of those trolley legs could be a blessing. I hope so - Jae

  9. I agree with Jae. The way you've told the story, the ending felt more right than sad.
