CDXXXIX - The Fall

Three Word Wednesday requires participants
to use the three words of the week in a composition.
The words this week were 'focussed', 'pair' and 'vacant'.

And, guess what?  If you look closely
you will find a Herrick's Stanza!

The Fall

Quiet.
Focussed.
Vacant even.
Blankly hiding intent.
Cards held closely.
A prayer—
Requests divine consent.
But then—
The need to beat three tens—
A pair.
That’s it.
All gone.
Forlorn, he walks,
Numbly,
Leaving behind his all.
And more.

  1. So well written - and has meaning on many levels.

  2. Bleak, but definitely captures the quiet desperation of such a situation.

  4. Not just gambling - speculation and any risk tasking can also result in loss of everything. Lady Luck favours only a few methinks! I suppose you have been reduced to a little pat of soft butter in this heat. Back in Sidernee- only a very comfortable 35 at the moment. Keep cool!

  5. And does he pray more generally? And was the risk worth it? Tomorrow will he try again? So many questions... Thank you. I will think about this for a while.

  7. I don't believe in gambling—don't much get the point of wasting all my money on chance. but I do understand its appeal.

I like the lead in; I can picture him there at the table his poker face intacted.
