Disappointment
The first impression stuns the eyes:
You glisten as of gold,
Around you people fashion dreams
That comfort and enfold.
But no,
The truth has no such glow.
It seems
The promises were inflated
The promises were inflated
And the gilding cannot disguise
Base metal, that has been plated.

Things are not always as they first appear. Change permeates; we evolve.
ReplyDeleteYour piece reminds us to remain mindful. Simply stated, nicely done.
Cheers!
ha. yes, you have to wonder why, at times, we fight for the things we go...a gold plated piece of metal...smiles.
ReplyDeleteThinking of anyone in particular?
ReplyDeleteBarack Obama and his tardiness in closing Guantanamo was the primary inspiration but it sort of applies to everyone to some extent, from presidents to receptionists. And to me. None of us are 24/24.
DeleteI had tried to find a picture of the Presidential Seal, minus the eagle, as the illustration but couldn't find what I wanted and didn't have time to PS my own.
24/24?
Delete24 carat, around the clock.
Delete:-)
DeleteAh yes, life can be like that.
ReplyDeleteAll that glitters is not gold...and so often, unfortunately, this is true!
ReplyDeleteVery cutting - nicely done!
ReplyDeleteAnd I think 24/24 could catch on.
I would like to think so! Thank you.
DeleteIt ended rather abruptly for me. Partly it was meter because you changed it up a bit in the last stanza (and I know next to nothing about poetic forms and their meters). Mostly because I wanted you to extend the story.

Interesting observation. Thank you. I will keep that in mind next time.
DeleteHahahahaaa.....!
DeleteI always say 'interesting' when I think someone is full of crap :)
A pleasure, as always Cosmo.
