691 : The Food Pyramid

Three Word Wednesday requires participants
to use the three words of the week in a composition.
The words this week were: gaunt, vile and decompose.

The Food Pyramid.

Overweight
And far from gaunt
Consumers to the core;
We publicly
Label things as vile
While privately
Seeking more.

At some cost.

Proportion
Has been lost.

Fertile,
Whole food
Will decompose.
While the junk,
The advertisers flaunt,
Will outlast
The Pharoahs.

      Oh, and alcohol.

    1. A little guy manning a stall at the supermarket this morning, offered me a small dish of crinkle cut chips (crisps). I took them. Out of politeness.

(could you have a man guying a stall?)

  3. Privately seeking more..that's what keeps the food pyramid churning I guess..also an economical and telling write...

  4. Yes, when you look at the 'use by' date on some stuff you would think it had been enbalmed.

  5. Did the Pharaohs develop the first food pyramid?

    1. It would appear so. FYI: chronologically, the title came last.

  6. Red wine is certainly in. And ladyfi is right.

  7. That's what is so really scary about all the processed foods...their longevity. The longevity of such foods shorten our own longevity, I do believe!

And I agree....red wine is always in!!!

  8. So very true & the advertising of such junk is laughable.....skinny cow cookies?

  11. So what's for dinner tonight?

  12. Antipasto platter, homemade pasta with smoked salmon, cream cheese and chives, salted caramel and chocolate ganache tart. 7pm. Don't be late.

  13. Nicely, the food pyramid, the cheese mountain, and the wine lake. Did anybody mention cake?

  14. Lucky Sancho being invited to dinner. Sounds delicious! Processed food such as bacon has high concentrate of something in it which makes it last a long time. I'm considering slaughtering my own livestock for meat which is going to present difficulties in an apartment block in the inner city>!

    1. Yeah, I see your concern. It is not a good thing to do in an apartment block. Neighbours can be SO unreasonable.

  15. Some pieces of food are clearly not meant too eat.. The decomposition test is really the best one

    1. Brussel Sprouts are borderline - they decompose but are clearly not meant to be eaten.

  16. true... and they are going into production of more genetically modified foods so in the future we could feed all the people. that kind of food will outlive us, no doubt :)

  17. Processed food is convenient, attractive and relatively cheaper. All for the cause of some unscrupulous entrepreneur to exploit. Worst it is adverse to the takers on a long term basis but of no concern to anyone. One needs to be careful obviously. Great write Cosmo!

    1. There is processed food, preserved food and manufactured food. Preserving has a long pedigree and a lot going for it. Processed food less so and manufactured food very little. But that doesn't mean it has no place, just not the biggest place.

  18. We are indeed digging our own tombs with our eating habits, in more a-ways than one unfortunately. The image of our food piles outlasting the Pharaohs is a very powerful one.

    1. I had the apple illustration before I came up with the title. Perhaps I should change it.

    2. Have gone from one apple to six oranges.

    3. Some of the oranges are very old. I think there should be some sort of labelling sticker to say when they were picked. American cherries are big bright and juicy but I wonder what they inject them with to make them bounce like rubber balls.:)

  20. we have some rather disgusting habits when it comes to food...proportion, i dont know that we we know what that is anymore....and while we may wish we could lose weight, first we have to curb our appetite

    ReplyDelete
  21. So very true! Humans talk a good line but continue their old habits.

  22. Absolutely, but your words and emphases make me smile at foibles rather than chide myself. Incorrigible.

  26. I like this poem. The terseness works well to throw a spotlight on the hypocrisy our consumerist times.

  27. Wow, you so nailed it. I consider myself a minimalist, myself. I don’t always succeed in being frugal, but definitely that’s where my heart lies. Very insightful, thank you!

  28. Absolutely correct. Times have changed. people prefer junk food to healthy, wholesome food.
    Nice poem.

  29. Oh you are so right - proportion has been lost. Along with common sense. Good one, kiddo!

  33. This was so spot on. So true, J Cosmo. And maybe that explains why we're so attracted to the artificial...maybe hoping some of that never-gonna-expire stuff rubs off on us. :)
