The Card
It’s your birthday.
I wonder where you are.
It’s your birthday,
Think of this as a card,
It was not to be, of course,
It all turned out for the best,
As they say,
As we went our separate ways,
Perhaps it was a test,
Who would know?
Drifted rather than expelled,
Shifted rather than repelled
We went our separate ways
Slipping silently into the mists
Turning sadly, not dismissed
Same old story, same old twist,
Slipping silently into the mists
Of time.
Time.
Time that numbs,
Time that overcomes
As they say,
But…
It’s your birthday.
I wonder where you are.
It’s your birthday,
Think of this as a card,
.

Wherever she is I hope she will know you're thinking of her!
ReplyDeleteI like the wistful, might-have-been feel of this.....
I think we all have those distant friends... sad when we loose contact...
ReplyDeleteVery neat clever write my friend - made me smile... With Best Wishes Scott
ReplyDeletePoignant and lovely.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! Great use of what-I-have-come-to-call "slip-and-slide" rhyme (for lack of a better description). It's there and then it slips wonderfully along, until it's there again. An awesome write!
ReplyDeleteA nice birthday card - a bit of a immortality for her :-) Sounds like you're still on decent terms so that's great!
ReplyDeleteI think we've all had these relationships where you just drift away from one another but you still do wonder about them. I love this wistful birthday greeting.
ReplyDeleteI really like this. So much. In every aspect.
ReplyDeleteVery clever and wistful poem.
