Poets and Storytellers United has the prompt "Opposites".
I take the view that a lot of what we consider opposites
are not really opposite at all.
Background note:
34ºC = 93ºF, 55ºC = 131ºF
Einstein's Sauna
You surely cannot be serious?
You'll be certified: mad & delirious.
The day's getting warmer
And your having a sauna?
It's all relative, says Albert, politely.
It's fifty five inside, let us say,
So when you leave to continue your day
The thirty four's a relief
(Though it is rather brief)
It's all relative, says Albert, quite rightly.

I tried this and it really does feel nice to step into 34ºC from 55ºC.
At its core, Einstein’s theory says that how things appear depends on where you are, how fast you're moving, and, apparently, how much coffee you've had. (The coffee bit is a joke). Einstein's Sauna is a delightful mix of humour and intellect.
ReplyDeleteThe playful rhyme and repetition of 'It's all relative' make profound ideas feel relatable. A witty and warm piece! Thank you!
Yes, looking at the prompt, ("Magaly will invite us to find inspiration in opposite concepts (i.e., light and dark, happy and sad, rich and poor, hot and cold, good and bad…)." Won't officially get posted until tonight. I snuck in early. ) hot and cold didn't seem opposites, just relative points on a scale. Each of these 'opposites' have multiple levels and shades of nuance.
DeleteTrue, what we see as opposites are often just different points on a spectrum. Life, much like Einstein's theories, isn’t always black and white, but filled with shades of meaning that shift depending on our perspective.
DeleteTrue. Thank you for your comments.
DeleteI hope I never experience 55C. 34C is more than hot enough for me though I did enjoy your take.
ReplyDeleteDoes 34 degrees really ever happen in Tassie? (At present it's not anywhere near happening in northern NSW either.) Anyway , it's a delightful poem, so deft and witty!
