909 - An Unheated Life

Three Word Wednesday requires participants
to use the three words of the week in a composition.
The words this week are: grave, firm and heated.

An Unheated Life

Before the grave there’s not much time
To make sense of this pantomime,
This charade where we all must play
Roles, some given, often cliché,
Roles where we seek some sort of rhyme
Or reason, to explain wartime
When we deserve a life sublime
But must battle through every day
Before the grave.

The firm promise of a lifetime
Is absent, is just a ‘sometime’
Promise, given in an off-hand way
By authorities of the day
Who ask no more but overtime
Before the grave.

  2. Argh! It really feels this way, doesn't it. That second stanza... damn those authorities.

  3. I guess that's why we do it isn't it?

That marble headstone, soon to be overgrown with moss.

  4. I think I'd settle with some overtime after the grave - I'd love to haunt a few people and places!

  6. luv these lines, for there is a war going on every where, i'd say

    "Or reason, to explain wartime
When we deserve a life sublime
But must battle through every day
    Before the grave."

    much love...

  7. Bleak. That's the word I saw in my mind as I read this. You took away the heat, darkening the picture and indeed, invoking a grave of emptiness, time passed in a fruitless rhyme. A thought-provoking poem. Thanks for sharing.

  10. When we deserve a life sublime
But must battle through every day
    Before the grave.

Life is but a struggle. Nothing can be seen as plain sailing!
