718 : Sharing the Cake

Three Word Wednesday requires participants
to use the three words of the week in a composition.
The words this week were: intrigue, connive, vehement.

And Imaginary Garden with Real Toads asks for a Herrick's Stanza.

So...

Sharing the Cake.

It never fails to intrigue me
How some folk will connive
To corner more than their fair share
And then thereby deprive
The meek,
The fair,
The slow,
The weak,
Of their
Portion of life’s posting
And to rashly ask why this should be
Will earn a vehement roasting.

  2. A kind of spin on 'let them eat cake'..we certainly do live in a world where to question is to put yourself forward for a bit of a roasting..

    1. Yes, it is mark harder to discuss issues now, with people too ready to put up barricades and defend first opinion or attack regardless.

  3. A polite answer is that humans are flawed. Another way of putting it is that most people are greedy shits, prey on the vulnerable, dog eat dog and survival of the fittest. Religious indoctrination reinforcing values like social justice equality etc is essential to keep the masses in check as they would never act out of altruistic motives if left to their own devices. It is generations of faith of your forebears that have formed your values which give you a sense of right and wrong. They are not your own. Even though you are now an atheist, you are a product of your Christian forebears.Uh oh the last time I said this there was a problem...but you need to hear it.I need to say it.

    1. No problems. Don't full agree, of course, as causality hasn't been established: do the religious texts direct care and compassion because they are written by people who have care and compassion? Your first sentence is indisputable.

  4. A humorous take on a serious issue. Humans are generally brought up with a very strong self-preservation tendency which easily translates to personal gratification too, I guess. So when they see the bigger slice of cake, they only see the bigger slice of cake and not the ones who it rightfully belongs to. As always, brilliantly penned. :D

  7. Those few claim the cake, the jam, the cream AND the strawberries. And, since there isn't enough to go around, generously offer the stale bread and scrape to the rest of us.

    1. Is that the 'trickle down from the top' theory that has worked so well in the US? (Sarcasm alert.)

    What do we want?
    Fair bite of the sponge!
    When do we want it?
    Now!

  9. And they are the folk who still demand more slices out of the cake...their greed is beyond comprehension.

  10. Shoot. Sounds like I'm in trouble for those times when I snitched the bigger slice of cake before my bro and sis could get their grubby hands on it! ;-)
Actually I see the very real point of your poem, and I am in agreement.
Thank you for visiting Poetry of the Netherworld.

  16. I was thrilled to see that you had linked up to this challenge. You have really made the Herrick stanza work for you. I especially like how you wound up your punch-line here.

  20. The Herrick's stanza form was a fun write, wasn't it? The directions weren't consistent but generally fairly close in agreement.

Now: everyone wants their share, some are happy with what they have, others want more. Still others want more and will be dishonest in attempting to get their more. Enron? General Motors? The pawn shop owner around the corner?

But I agree with our value system. Most all of it in the first and second world came from Biblical background, be it before the Muslim split, the Christian split, or the Jewish truisms.

The problem is that the values are now stressed by parents, educators, and business managers but they try to leave the religion part out. That doesn't work, trying to enforce ethics without an apparent historic reason.

  21. A great use of the form to make cake sharing comment on society. I agree.
